TITANS GO DOWN TO PLUCKY FRENCH IN THRILLING FINAL
On Saturday, May 19th, the Newtown Titans senior team participated in the second bi-annual Twinning Olympiad between Newtown, Les Herbiers, Liebertwolkwitz and Coria (did not compete). Newtown took down Les Herbiers by 7 points in the opening game, on the strength of 37 points by Guy Evans and a tremendous team defensive effort in the second half. Next on the agenda were Liebertwolkwitz whose inexperienced yet hope-filled side were dismantled by over 60 points. Titans U16 players Matthew Humphreys and Adam Yates impressed, among others, in the demolition. This set-up a rematch with the French for the final. Newtown got off to a bad start in the first half, trailing by 13 points at one stage until a switch in strategy brought them back in the game. Employing a 3-2 zone after the break caused the French's proverbial well to run dry, and soon enough Newtown were making a game of it, taking the lead by 1 with less than 3 minutes remaining. Les Herbiers soon responded with a controversial three-point play to restore their advantage and despite the best efforts of Evans (24 in the game), and Humphreys (several key plays in the waning moments), Newtown fell just short and lost the final by 2 points. Titans coach Guy Evans said: "I am really proud of everybody who participated despite the eventual loss in the final. Although we lost, we were not defeated. By battling and hustling throughout the entire tournament, we lived up to our team nickname of Titans. Now we have to focus on developing the future of the club with the youngsters we have coming through and continue to keep the senior players involved in some capacity. Who knows what the next two years will bring for all of us, myself included, but if possible we would love to travel to the next Olympiad in 2009 and take the crown. Well done everyone who played once again and many thanks to those who watched the games."
